WHAT IS TRIBAL SOVEREIGNTY?

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU:
SOVEREIGNTY IN ACTION!
Sovereignty isn’t just a word—it’s a responsibility. It’s how we care for our people, protect our lands, and make decisions for the future of our Nation. For us, sovereignty in action means doing the work—honoring our commitments, upholding our Constitution, and making sure our government serves the people in a good way.
Our LTBB Constitution lays out clear directives for how we govern—not just for today, but for the next seven generations. It calls on us to protect our language and culture, care for our children and Elders, strengthen education, and improve the health and well-being of our people.

We are committed to using these directives as our guide in every decision we make. Our focus comes directly from what we have heard from our community—these are the areas people have told us matter most. That’s why we are committed to the following: Honoring and Caring for Our Elders, Strengthening Community Through Shared Spaces, and, Education Rooted in Who We Are.

Honoring and Caring for Our Elders
Our Elders hold the wisdom of our Nation. They have carried our traditions, fought for our sovereignty, and shaped the path we walk today. It is our responsibility to ensure they have access to quality healthcare and the resources they need to live with dignity and respect. We will work to expand services, improve accessibility, and create stronger support systems that honor their lifelong contributions to our community.
Strengthening Community Through Shared Spaces
A strong community is built on connection. We need to ensure our Citizens feel welcome and supported in the spaces we already have, while also planning for future spaces that reflect our intergenerational ways of knowing and being. We will work to strengthen and better utilize existing community spaces, create more opportunities for people to gather, and develop a long-term plan for an intergenerational space that supports our traditions and relationships.
Education Rooted in Who We Are
Education is about knowing who we are as Waganakising Odawak and preparing our Citizens to succeed in all spaces. The reality is, most of our children attend public schools. We must strengthen relationships with the state and local school districts so our children can thrive in non-Native spaces while staying grounded in who they are. We will work to ensure our people have access to learning opportunities that balance traditional knowledge with the academic supports they need to succeed—both in school and in life.
